Assistant Educator for School Programs

The mission of the Mystic Arts Center is to foster the creation, understanding, appreciation and enjoyment of the visual arts through exhibitions and education programs.  Central to the interests of the Center are the operation and maintenance of galleries and studios serving as a center for cultural activities in the greater Mystic area. The Center will maintain an art museum and expand a Permanent Collection of art reflective of the community’s past and present creative communities.  Through dedication to excellence and high standards, the Center strives to promote the importance of the arts in the enrichment and quality of community life.

The Mystic Arts Center seeks an Assistant Educator for School Programs to work within a dynamic and growing Education Department overseeing school audiences, programs and resources. This position develops, implements, and evaluates all Pre-K – 12 school programs and resources.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement and evaluate a variety of arts and arts-integrated programming to serve the needs of Pre-K – 12 schools, based on best practices in arts and museum education
  • Serve as the organization’s liaison to and advocate for Pre-K – 12 schools
  • Develop and maintain policies and practices for School Programs
  • Maintain proper files and data base to support School Programs
  • Oversee, train, evaluate and recruit new teaching faculty
  • Maintain school program inventories
  • Work as team-member to share information and plan programming
  • Market School Programs in partnership with marketing staff; identify strategic contact lists, oversee printing & distribution of brochures, submit copy for distribution to public
  • Produce statistics and copy for grant proposals and reports
  • Work with support staff of volunteers and interns
  • Begin incorporating technology into school programming
  • Teach all school tours on site, and off-site in partnership with teaching faculty.
  • Work three major events (Annual Meeting in Spring, summer fundraiser and Holiday Gala in late Fall) unless approved by the Director
  • Other duties as requested by the Education Director

Qualifications

  • Bachelor degree in education, fine art, art history or teaching certificate, or equivalent experience
  • Three years experience working and/or teaching in a school or informal educational setting
  • Experience designing outcome-based evaluation and rubrics
  • Experience writing curricula
  • Familiarity with Connecticut’s educational resources, programs and state curricular frameworks
  • Grant-writing experience
  • Strong communications skills
  • Organized and able to prioritize multiple tasks well
  • Creative thinker
  • Technologically literate

A flexible schedule and one’s own transportation is required.

Salary Range and Benefits

  • This exempt position is grant-funded for 25 hours per week, starting at $12 per hour depending on experience.
  • Additional teaching time of 5-10 hours weekly at $30 per hour, depending on program and experience.
  • Benefits package includes medical, and dental.
